Colour Dilemma

Hi all,

My body work guy has just landed the bombshell that he believes my 1974 CSI was not originally red but gold. There is sufficient evidence to support this theory (it was certainly gold at some point before 1986), with one possible exception. The seats are black cloth and I'm not sure that gold and black cloth were an available combination. I had planned to repaint in red to keep it original, even though it would not be my favourite colour. I can not however bring myself to paint it in gold though, so a colour change may be back on the table. So, question is was gold and black an available colour combination? I'm I right question this based on link below?

If you write to BMW classic they can tell you the original color. If it was Ceylon gold then the black closet is possible and would look terrific.

Ian, if your original colour is Ceylon, I agree with Stan.. would look great and very "'70's"....a picture as they say ...

Hi Ian,

I was flirting with changing the color of my coupe. Originally Chamonix, it has a non-correct white as a top coat. I'm more limited in my color choices as I have a blue interior. I was longing for a more exciting color, but the blue interior certainly would give away a non-original exterior choice.
In the end, I've decided to stick with Chamonix since it's a subtle color and not very common.

Since you have a black interior, you have pretty free reign to choose a color that appeals to you, unless you want to limit yourself to factory available combinations.
Ceylon is certainly a 'wow' color, but one that I'd consider for my car if it had an interior that would work with it.

Chamonix works with blue, tan, black or red.

Thanks all. I should have added that I am probably going to have seats recovered, so I do have the option now to change seat colour. Having seen the picture above, I have to agree that it looks great in Ceylon. I will email BMW classic as per above suggestion and establish what colour the car was originally and take it from there. I must admit, I'm very partial to these cars in navy.

Get some color samples of Ceylon.

Then, have your painter do some things to it that would make it more palpable to you. Like adding pearl, or slightly lighten/darken it, or adding some tint from another color to change the hue some. Too dark, it'll look mustard, too light, it may be too gold for your tastes, but you'll never know until you try it and see for yourself in person what are the possibilities.

I'm not a fan of my OEM Atlantik Blau so much, but I want to do the same and make some slight changes to make it a bit more modern and too more of my tastes; like pearl, and maybe a bit darker.

there are a lot of nacht blue + atlantik blue coupes around. there are not that many ceylon coupes. the color of ceylon can also vary a little. find the post of Matt Hoffman's ceylon coupe for sale earlier this year ... it is gorgeous. if your coupe was originally ceylon, that's what i would paint it. it is not quite as brown as the one in this thread.

I found the pictures of Matt's car and I agree that it is a lovely car. Very difficult decision! I do like the idea of originality, but I'm also mindful of the opportunity to have the colour I want on the car. That I am aware of, there are almost no E9's in Ireland, so it will be a very rare car here in nacht blue or indeed any colour. I will certainly be keeping it to an original colour. I must admit though, it does give me reason to think when all of you guys are suggesting Ceylon. Thanks all, much appreciated...

I was in the same spot a year ago, and for a while I was leaning towards Ceylon, but after looking at all the pictures I possibly could find of that color, I came to the conclusion that Ceylon is a very nice color on a coupe, just not on my coupe.
I'm afraid one might grow tired of that paint after a while, but thats just my opinion, and who am I to say anything after I went with the "safest" color option there is, Polaris.

You should paint it in whatever color you want most, as it's your car and you're the one who is going to be looking at it the most, and it's going to be gorgeous no matter what you choose

Yes it's definitely a personal choice. I was never a Ceylon fan, but i had also never seen one in person. For the past month I've had Matt's old car that my friend bought in my garage sorting it and the color has grown on me and now i think it is fantastic. Better still is the driving experience where people's reactions make it a sensation wherever you go. Lots of times my polaris slips by people, but not this color. It is so outrageously period 70's that it adds to the overall driving experience. It's still a love it or hate it color, and it is good to think it through carefully like you are before saying no. I've done a 180.

You aren't the only coupe owner in Ireland, though there aren't a lot. Check the User Map link at the top of the page and click on the push pins to get the user names in that area. Clicking on their name will show the last time they logged in. Some are quite old, but there are several that have logged in recently. You can send them a message (start a conversation) if you'd like to get to know them better.

I felt the same way about Golf. Having only seen pictures I was never the fan of the color on a coupe. In person however, it looks stunning! Cell phone photos just don't do it justice.

That is very true, Steve.
I've never seen one in person so that is definitely a factor. Another thing is that there seems to be alot of different shades of "Ceylon", but it's all a matter of taste so I can't say some look better or worse.
Matt's car sure does look stunning in these photos, and is probably much nicer IRL.
Another thing to consider is if you really want everybody around you to react to your car, it can be fun for a while, but also a PITA if you don't want the attention.

i have seen a fair number of 2002 in ceylon, and i have to say it was never my favorite. having seen a coupe in ceylon is totally different because of the shape and grace of the car. i can see where its a love it or leave it color ... i don't think its quite as much of a 'look at me' color as is taiga, golf, verona, inka or colorado. kind of a more complex color like agave, riviera or turkis ... still very period correct.

Mark, i'm not with you on golf. i have seen several different BMW in golf. it has never been my favorite color or one of them. i think they are very cool, and great for somebody else to own ... just never for me. i still consider that my 2 biggest coupe mistakes is not having bought the ceylon coupe below on the 2 opportunities i had to do so. i really wish i had bought it from Peter 5 or 6 years ago.
