worried about better performance of coolant in the engine, including:

- heat dissipation
- avoid corrosion (aluminium and copper)
- avoid cavitation

I use an inorganic 50/50 (50% water), pre-mixed coolant

heard about using glycol 100%, unsound?

what makes ? recommendations ? fleetguard ?

coolants

Yes, 100% glycol would be unsound. Water is a better agent in conduction of heat chemically speaking. But the addition of glycol lowers the freezing temperature along with the benefit of corrosion inhibitors.

A mixture of glycol and water in 50% concentration is the most recommended (concentration depends on your climate) for systems with brass/ copper. The other types of antifreeze ( orange, blue, etc.) are formulated with an inorganic acid compatible with/ formulated for aluminum radiators.

There is an additional wetting agent that can be used. In therory, it helps in dissapation.

The only other safeguard as a suggestion would be to wire your auxillary fan through a manual switch or a two spade temperature switch whereby it would aid in cooling should you ever need it.

Hope this helps.

What do you suggest for our hot climates - 50/50 or more water than coolant - at what point do you have to worry about boilover?

Antifreeze

50/50 for our climate, inhibiting corrosion, and freeze protecton. Changed and flushed ideally every two years. Keep an extra t-stat and gasket around. I use an 80 degree stat with as much a/c as I run here.

yeah, thanks, that is what I thought, but as many opinions are coming from other forums (more modern bmw´s comprised), I like to crosscheck with the e9 specialists !

remark: one of the reasons for that guys to experiment with strange mixtures, is, in my opinion, that they are bored with their cars (so modern that no problems arise in everyday use), then they look for action with those unsound experiments, :-D
