I am putting together a list to do a bit of one stop shopping for parts I will have shipped to Buffalo and am in need of some suggestions for refreshing the cooling system. I priced a recored rad, and it appears it makes more sense to just buy a new one. My stock fan is non functioning and I would like to replace it with a viscous unit from a later BMW. Does anyone have the part number or know which model BMW had the easiest to integrate fan system? I might consider a good quality used one here. Do most run the plastic fan shroud I see in the Penske parts list ? IS there a thermostat brand identical to BMW that is priced less?
Are stock BMW hoses the best way to go? I noticed Ireland has a silicone kit for $90. Anyone have experience with the fit and look?

Tia.

assuming that you know and can use walloth as a supplier for your parts, probably is the best way to complete it, they have almost everything:

1- new fan + new viscous + new adapter = kit w&n
2- new hoses = set w&n
3- bmw thermostats usually are from a brand called BEHER or other called WAHLER, or at least you can find an equivalent WAHLER tstat (not sure if it is cheaper)

other updates or parts recommended (also from walloth):

1- new water pump
2- agree on a new radiator, let it be of the more efficient type (A&C version)

a convenient set of gaskets and washers will be needed, so check the part list and catalog that wallotnesch offers for free and order the necessary items to assure that you have everything in order when you start

regards

remark: you can take a look to this guide to renew the cooling system:

one small advise, do not save money in these parts, the cooling system is essential !

Don't know your stance on originality, but I've been considering a replacement radiator from a E12 5 Series. That aluminum radiator is Behr W0133-1663610 and can be had for about $230 to $250 from partsgeek, autohausaz or carstuff, no affiliation, just the sources I have looked at. Shipping to you may be free, but for me in Hawaii it's huge.

The correct BMW number is available on realoem but may be NLA. CNPR has copper radiators, you can talk to Ben there.

Then there is the aftermarket. Someone else can comment about "Silla" brand, or others out there.

Good Tip about Napa Chris. Do you know from what car the fan to get came from ?

Great documentation of your cooling system overhaul De Quincey.
Adam, thanks for the link. I think I prefer the stock look rather than a custom Al rad.

I thought it was early e28 but you also need the nose piece that mounts to the water pump plus the new fan.
