Dear friends,

I have discovered that my 1973 (actually 10/72) 3.0 coupe has an incorrect distributor cap: the cap fits correctly, but it has no index tab to fit to fit down into the notch in the distributor body. The cap fitted on the car has a notch and is made for a distributor which has an index tab that inserts into the notch in the cap. Does anyone know the correct part number for the distributor cap with a tab that inserts into the notch on the distributor ?

Sincerely

John

Correct distributor cap for CS is BMW OEM nr 12111351446 / 12118730057 or BOSCH nr 1235522060.
Maybe someone before used CSI type cap.

I'm pretty sure that OEM nr 12111351446 is what is on the distributor now : the picture on fpe euro's website of this cap has the notch in the cap, like mine. It's not the right cap for my distributor.

Cap nr 12111351446 is for cars as below (carburetor motor). Maybe you have incorrect distributor or distributor rotor? Start with identification of the distributor number (should be on side wall of the case). Every cap and distributor must have a notch, without it you can't properly mount it.

Exactly, I can't get the timing exactly on with out a cap that has a tab . Distributor might have been changed out in the past, or it might have come like that from the factory, who knows.

Probably someone replaced distributor with different one, then someone bought distributor cap according to OEM numbers thinking that it should be proper one.
As i mentioned before - identify distributor (markings on the distributor side wall).

lack of notch will not affect timing but will possibly cause issues with rotor arm to cap segment alignment, not critical but worth fixing, keep the damaged one in the trunk as a spare, the distributor must be from an M30 engine, the slight differences for different part numbers relate to vacum and mechanical advance curves not cap fitment as far as I remember............
