putting a rebuilt (top-end) bavaria engine into my dad's e9 coupe. since the engine is out we are replacing the oil pump gear and chain (lots of slack). the new gear i purchased is designed to fit over a splined shaft...the old gear doesn't have a splined shaft, but rather was mounted with three bolts. on every part-site i search only the "new-style" center-splined gear shows available for the early 70's bavaria. anyone know what i need to do?

Ok, I went to my garage and pulled my ancient Factory Repair manual for BMW 2500-3.3Li. section 11 41 000 shows only a three bolt sproket on the shaft. Further inspection shows that the o-pump drive is not splined.
You may have a different O-pump in there than is stock.
Also to adjust slack you use spacer plates.

GO to a dealer and look at the parts diagrams and compare, you may want to get a pump without splines.
Also you mention the topend...Head or is it the short block or both??

Be careful if you are putting a rebuilt Head on an old block with a lot of miles...you could blow a ring under high load especially if you raced the cams.

BTW the manual # is 01 51 9 599 360, it or an updated version may be available from BMW, not sure I bought this many years ago after buying my coupe in Deutschland.

Good luck,
Jon

thanks for the quick reply john. so is the part number you gave me the # for the 3 bolt oil sprocket? that's what i need i think. i'd like to not have to replace the oil pump, etc. i'll try to attach a pic of the part i need. the teeth are a little rounded, which is why i was looking to replace it.

The number I gave is for the Factory Repair Manual, unfortunately it doesn't give this #, only some usually regaridng and amendment/change from factory. I have not had updates for...a long time.

But they gave you a wrong sprocket. How does the old one line up with the chain, it should have rounded valleys with flat-edged crest. the rounded compensates for the round chain links.

If there is a dealer around ring'm to check the number as well as see if the guy who got the splined one will make it right??
