Corrosion bites!

Hi all,

I'm having my 2800 CS restored here in the UK - The garage that did the strip-down and coordination of the welding work and body / paint have called me down there to say that, with regret, the guy they outsourced the welding work to has missed several vital areas of corrosion on the inner sills (rockers) and that they think the best option is to replace the complete sill assemblies to ensure all corrosion has been dealt with properly.

I've already had the car painted so this will mean undoing some of the paint work. I've been to see the car and can see what they mean, so I do not doubt their opinion. I have some questions:

1) How are these cars constructed - I understand they may be an outer sill, an inner and a panel in the middle that you only see once the outer has been removed?

2) Does anyone have any of these panels for sale (unused) in the UK or Europe?

3) Failing that, who is the best and most cost-effective supplier in the UK or EU?

Thanks

Bummer.

Walloth & Nesch is good source in Germany. I ordered the outer sills from them and they arrived the next day (and I am on the west coast of the US).

I would take the outer sill off first. In doing so you will likely destroy it anyhow. Then you can assess the condition of the structural center beam. The inner sill is what you see from the inside of the car. The outer sill extends back to the rear wheel arch behind the lower section of the rear quarter panel - so you either need to remove the panel or cut out the lower section. If there is a lot of rot in the sills then the lower section of the rear quarter panel is likely shot as well. W&N has replacement panels for this area.

Do a search on the forum for Malc's posts. He has posted a lot of pictures of the nether regions of his coupe.
