I'm planning on bringing my 2000cs from Germany. I have read a lot of articles and advices, but none of them relate to vintage cars and most people import old cars from USA to Europe. Therefore I hope someone went through this process before:

- What documents do I need?
- How much does importing a car like that cost?
- Which carrier company to use?
- What is the process of registering it? (I'm in Massachusetts)

Mind the car is freshly restored, with new paint, all documents and parts complete. I heard there are some bio issues that importers look at for US customs.

Thanks in advance

Rafal,

It's not a complex process. The US Customs and Border Protection, CBP, will assess a 2.5% import duty on the value of the car. When I have imported cars, I had an invoice which is what CBP used to assess the duty.

If I already owned the car, as it sounds you do, I would provide a written statement of what the car is worth according to the market value. US values are generally lower than European values for these cars so that helps a bit.

I documented the complete importing process on my blog as seen on my sig. It should be helpful to you.

These guys did a great job bringing a classic of mine from Canada to the UK, and they are equally experienced going the other direction from Europe to the US. They do a door-to-door service and everything in between.

I will absolutely use them again to ship my CSL and other cars back to the US when I eventually relocate.
