At the Great Neck Plaza Auto Festival nestled appropriately or not, between two sublime Rolls Royces', was a lone '72 Agave Coupe.
Cursing the placement gods and realizing that none of my Coupe or 2002 buddies had shown up, I considered trying to disappear withiut being seen but, alas the rope boundaries were up and more exotica cars were coming in behind me. I decided to simply back away and observe...
Turns out the single BMW, among the 100 or so vintage and collector cars was anything but lonely. The Coupe received more than a fair share of attention. Amazingly, folks drifted past the Rollses in rapt confusion, curiousity and admiration.
Some people stepped over the rope boundaries to peer closer, leaving fingerprints on the paint while asking about provenance, restoration history.... and leaving cards if it were to come onto the market.
Hmmmn...I think we might be onto something with this coupe madness after all.
Who 'da thunk that by the end of the day, after hearing countless comments like "did you see that BMW coupe?", "I always wanted one of those coupes", or "that was the coolest coupe BMW ever made", I'd feel just fine being the only BMW.... among such an awesome collection.
Of course, it will really be a hoot when the rest of the East Coast Coupsters show up as a collective next year... to create a commotion amongst the upper crust collector folk.
