Welcome Matt.
There are a few threads on this site regarding issues, and a DIY photo journal by deQuincey on window refresh.
Worth reading the threads even if you take the car to a shop so you know what to ask. Overall the system is simple and pretty accessible compared to modern cars I have tried to fix windows on.
As a 72 you probably have what we call "sardine can" motors that seldom break, though they are fast but not strong, The motors have one ground lead and to 12V leads, one per direction. The windows switches in the console sent 12V to one mpotor lead, the other, or none. The ground does not go thorugh the switch. There are no relays so the high current goes through the switches making it critical to have clean contacts or new switches.
Some car have a fuse to protect from current overload, but most do not. For those the switches become a fuse of sorts as they can heat and melt earlier than the motor I think.
The window regulators have a greased rail that deserves to be cleaned and regreased.
There is a gearbox between the motor and the regulator that can break in many ways. You can buy used ones form the traditional suppliers. I had to replace mytwo front gearboxes.
A few simple troubleshooting steps:
Yank out the switch of a non working window, see if you have 12V at the center connection. If you do, short that connection to one of the other wires to bypass the switch and see if you hear the motor at least. Repeat for all windows.
No motor noise in either direction probably means the ground cable is broken. Need to remove the door trim and start working inside the door.
