Did a double take on my bike yesterday; silver/black CS w/ Costa Mesa rear plate at a service shop on Madison Avenue in Dumont. Right in my backyard...

adding to bert's clue: the license plate is from european collectibles in costa mesa. i haven't seen them advertise a coupe in a few years.

i agree Chris,

i zoomed in and the gap on the back right bumper is very tight and there seems to be a little shadow under the antenna where it hung over the front fender.

this Cs you are referrring to is mine. It was infact purchased in costa mesa and has just been shipped back a few weeks ago. Gettting some minor things sorted out at the local shop.

Yes, welcome to the site Matt! Didn't mean to publicize your car, but the only time I see a coupe in my neck of the woods is when I'm driving mine!

NO worries i actually thought it was funny bc i had never heard about this site and am new to the car altogether. I own a 95 Defender 90 aswell and i know the cult following those have so i wasnt surprised that the 3.0 was spotted and discused in a forum of some sort. Would love to pick your brain about the car at some point...having some window issues with it now that i am trying to sort through.

Welcome Matt.
There are a few threads on this site regarding issues, and a DIY photo journal by deQuincey on window refresh.

Worth reading the threads even if you take the car to a shop so you know what to ask. Overall the system is simple and pretty accessible compared to modern cars I have tried to fix windows on.

As a 72 you probably have what we call "sardine can" motors that seldom break, though they are fast but not strong, The motors have one ground lead and to 12V leads, one per direction. The windows switches in the console sent 12V to one mpotor lead, the other, or none. The ground does not go thorugh the switch. There are no relays so the high current goes through the switches making it critical to have clean contacts or new switches.
Some car have a fuse to protect from current overload, but most do not. For those the switches become a fuse of sorts as they can heat and melt earlier than the motor I think.

The window regulators have a greased rail that deserves to be cleaned and regreased.
There is a gearbox between the motor and the regulator that can break in many ways. You can buy used ones form the traditional suppliers. I had to replace mytwo front gearboxes.

A few simple troubleshooting steps:

Yank out the switch of a non working window, see if you have 12V at the center connection. If you do, short that connection to one of the other wires to bypass the switch and see if you hear the motor at least. Repeat for all windows.
No motor noise in either direction probably means the ground cable is broken. Need to remove the door trim and start working inside the door.

Len, yeah they do great work there. The guy to see there is Lee. Genius with Land Rover Defenders but knows his way around most imports.
