The original speedometer wire had a thick, black plastic tube outside the wire (with its thin covering) for the bottom section (about 20" long). This was presumably to protect the wire against physical damage from driving on less than smooth, even Autobahns.

When replacing the wires with the new, longer ones that reach (with good margin) the socket on the 5 speed boxes, I simply skipped the protection tubing. It seemed impossible to remove and use on the new wire.

Has anybody managed to remove it and use it with the new cable?
I used 3 smaller attachment clamps.

When I installed my 5 sp and new cable it came with larger covering. I don't believe that it was removable.
May be why no responses.

Nobody seems to care for the cover tube for the speedo wire.....?!?!

I am really sorry, I can not help, I have the original 4 speed manual getrag

the cover seems a hard plastic, maybe ABS, you might find a suitable one from other application field, but nobody knows if it will resist the warming that the spinning cable will produce

the only simmilar product I happen to know is the small piping tubes for grass watering (I don´t know if they are the correct words), you know those tubes for conducting the water from the tap, under the soil, until the automatic grass wetting system

that material is similar, but if it is PVC it will not be so heat resistant as ABS

hope it helps

Ah, interestin.
My new wires (several of them) did not come with a "permanently" attached tubing.
Where did you buy yours?
I got mine from W&N in Germany.

I suppose one could use HDPE (high density polyethylene). That is used for irrigation lines. The problem would be how to put it on in a way that it would be fixed in one place, and seal it so as not retain any water that got inside. There are some excellent quality polysulfide caulking compounds available and in use by the boating community, Dow 5200 comes to mind.

what speedo cable to use w/ 5 speed

just reading these posts makes we wonder what speedo cable to use w/ a 5 speed. my cable is broken and i just ordered a new cable for a 3.0cs ... not thinking that i might need a longer cable.

so if i do need a longer cable ... anybody got a part number or what model the cable should come from?

thanks in advance for any insight

Speedometer cables for automatic trans (62 12 1 810 624) are longer and I think that the cables for automatic trans E3s are longer still.
