Hi all, I just ran across a mysterious difference in the front bumper assembly of two e9's. Mine, which is for sale, has a different shape than one a local body shop needs to replace.

Mine is in the first photo and the one the body shop needs to replace is in the second photo. The difference is in the shape of the rubber and chrome pieces that jut out at the front of the bumpers. One is more pointed than the other and the angles are different.

Does anyone know the reason for the difference?

Pretty sure that's the difference between the 72 and 73 overriders. BMW made the change with the 73 model year to meet new DOT requirements.

one is a 1973 - the one that is more pointed that projects out more at the top - often called the reverse dagmar. they are hard to find to replace as they are NLA. you can replace them with the one that came on USA cars from 1970 to 1972, and all European cars - the one in the pic on the right.

Interesting. Is the one of the left a US model then? I'd thought it might be Euro because I got it from my brother who imported CS's from Europe in the '80s.

That is not a 73 rubber guard, both pics are from the top. One might be from an e3 which has a slightly different shape but both have points on the top. And the chrome pieces can be swapped left to right but won’t look right.

Interesting. So what year is this one from then?
