This is the engine out of my 74 CSI, as i am not the most mechanical minded person to arrive on this planet i was wondering is it the original type engine or a more modern one, i checked the engine number and it came up as coming from a 1990 car which has me very confused, any help would be much appreciated.

Joe,

Look for numbers above the starter on a flat pad. Those are the numbers you need to check.

The right side of the block numbers don't mean much except the ones in the middle. But I can't make out the numbers entirely. Looks like 23E "70" ? Usually this means the day, month a=january, etc. and year.

From the right motor mount it doesn't appear to be a later block 88 and up. Those blocks require adapters to use that motor mount. ( Plate, angle iron, etc.)

Sometimes you can also tell somewhat the year by the large numbers on the left side ; 3.0/3.3...3.2, 3.5, etc.

Also look at the head on the left side- a circle with two numbers- 81, etc. for the year, shape of the intake ports, etc.

From a RHD 3.0CSi, if that is your VIN it is the original D-Jet block. What is casting date on head? Hopefully from the 80's indicating a better head.

This number over the starter matches the number on the car, i also have 23 E 70,

Thanks for you help Chris

As I recall the head casting date will be the year such as 85 in a circle on the intake side. Early heads had cooling issues.
