The steel fuel line for the CSi is still available through the dealer (1 61 21 111 538). The dealer parts department can't tell if it is just a coil of tubing the correct length with end flares or if it is the "straight" section with the correct angle bends and elevations which would make installation easier. Anybody know which version to expect?

Not sure of what you will find today...I know that many years ago I need a steel line and got straight piece (with end flares) from dealer and need to use a bender. Using a bender is not hard at all, you can get them at most parts stores; do not try to bend a steel tube without it.

You will probably get a coil of tubing, similar to the brake lines.

I used standard copper fuel lines. Very easy to bend all the angles. csi=twice the work :)

And don´t forget the thin, rubber protections around the tubes at the mounting supports along the way....Ideally a tube, but easier to take a tube and cut it to allow easy mounting.
I have seen the original ones, ready to install with the bends and turns correctly done. Cannot remember if they were steel or copper. Probably steel as they seemed very steady.

Thanks all - I've got the bender. I'll consider other alternatives if I have to bend the OEM piece anyway.

Check out http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com. I bought a fuel line from them about 18 months ago for $26, part # 16 1 21 107 875. It was steel, formed to the correct pattern with beads at each end, and painted with a greenish coating. I wish all parts were this reasonable.

Just checked on Maximilian´s website.
Only the return pipe is available (for USD 27).
Not the fuel pipe.
Are they similar enough to use for both purposes on a FI car?

I am using the new one for the fuel supply line. I converted from carbs to EFI. The existing fuel line (1972 CS), is being used as the return line. The old and new pipes are identical in shape and length. I actually wish the fuel lines were a bit longer at the front end. It is a bit awkward to make the connection with the rubber hose leading into the engine compartment (the joint is at the small opening in the lower corner of the inner fender).

Sven:

Good news that the return is pre-bent. Interesting that the Mobile Trad site call both of the CSi fuel lines "Return Pipe".

RETURN PIPE 1 16121111538 $27.18
RETURN PIPE 1 16121107875 $31.40

Your EFI conversion used the existing CS fuel line as the return (which is also the return for the CSi). The fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump (16121111538) would be the stock fuel feed in a CSi and is sized to connect in the stock location by the passenger half shaft.

I'm going to put the fuel pump in the trunk (as did you, right?) so I should order (16121107875) which is the return line in both CS/CSi.

Correct? Can't remember whether you have a surge tank or not.

Doug,

Yes, that should work. I am not sure of the differences between the two pipes you listed. I used the slightly more expensive one.

My system has no surge tank and the primary fuel pump is directly in front of the fuel tank (in the space below the wood floor). If I remember correctly, I had to bend the last section of pipe to offset it so that it would enter the trunk area through a new hole about 6-8 cm towards the center of the car. Once through the holes into the trunk space, the plumbing gets creative in order to make all the appropriate turns to reach the tank entry/exit points.
