It's a CS, not CSi, sorry. Same seller of the rusty blue CSi in January so well known here. This one is red and I inspected it in September in Anaheim, asking $25K at that time, sold for less than $20K, worth about $15K. Buyer beware, serious fender rust and seller has no pics of engine or fenders and he wants $49K.

The rise in coupe prices for decent coupes is pulling all of the low lifes out of the shadows trying to ride the coattails of good coupes.

I have fairly recently implemented an informal and likely to be poorly-followed policy of not talking about prices of cars I haven't looked at, partially due to lack of first-hand knowledge and partially due to the whole willing buyer/willing seller problem. With that out of the way, I will say that while I recognize the prices of our cars are rising, and maybe quickly - for $26k I would expect a little more in the way of photography, description, cleaning, etc. (In fairness, there are >150 pics on the shutterfly site, but even though I don't have the exacting standards of my art director wife I think they could show the car better.)

Also, this: "it was imported to the us buy a very famous dealer at the time, and it was his daily driver."

Seems like someone on here would know whether this could possibly be true for any reasonable values of famous and/or daily.

Check out pic number 80, the rest of the coupe has similar issues. It has sat outside for some time, the trunk was wet and moldy, no sunroof seal, etc. I felt sorry for the seller at the time, he owned it 25 years or so. Rust in quarter panels and bottom corners of doors, funky aftermarket AC with weird plumbing under dash, paint is 20 years old. I will look for my photos to add.

wow,

you have to be more than self confident to set the asking price to 50 Grant for such a trash.
Maybe there's more insanity than self confidence. I wouldn't be to surprised if buyer and seller can't close the contract, because both will wear these nice white jackets, which are supposed to be closed on the backside.

Whenever I'd like to sell my car, should consider to ship it to Hollywood.
Must be about 200k $ then. Will set the reserve to 150

Some of you Americans are real Aliens to me ....

cheers

Ingo

Ingo relax. Nobody bought the car yet. For all I know some of the price increases are Germans buying cars in California. The ZF guru here is Swiss and told me that the 73 type Mercedes 450 are disappearing here and being returned to Germany.
As for aliens you may be on to something, the ad is grammatically a translation
"Gas tank been redone" and "mechanically is perfect" are literal translations.

Arde,

be sure I am rather relaxed.
Obviously there's a certain flow of cars from California to Germany. Not only the German cars, but also the American classics for a rather specific kind of customer here.
But as far as I know there are/were 2 main reasons for these people to get cars from the States - low prices and less rust.
Maybe this is not longer valid and I need to reset my mind in that direction
But be sure: Nobody here would spend more than about 10 k € for that red CS from Hollywood and it even wouldn't be that easy to find a buyer for that money ....

cheers

Ingo

You are right Ingo, low prices and less rust may not last forever.

I think that high restored car prices represent a signal that these cars are worth restoring rather than parting, and that signal is reflected in seller's behavior.

In this case the danger lies in buying online vs. seeing the car in person like Chris indicates.

Germans buying back MB but not BMW, haven't seen one California 3.0 come back here...too many locally, but 20 percent appreciation in past year as oldtimer market reaches bubble phase, like every other "investment"....and there will be fewer parts cars, get you spares soon, they are rapidly drying up over the pond...

I was almost that sucker...

I don't know why I didn't check here first... just beware of this seller as his version of rust free is significantly different than mine, and maybe yours too...

Dear googoutgoogout,

Hi, please confirm there is no rust on the car. I think the photo of the fender in your shutterfly account shows some bubbling at the seam. If there is rust here, or in other areas of the car, please disclose immediately and I will retract my bid. Thanks.

Dear johnbobincheck,

there is some bubbling very minimal. No major rust. please feel free to come and inspect it if you wish. but overall very very minimal bubbling of rust. under the car is rust free and also on the shock towers is rust free witch is the most important part.

Dear googoutgoogout,

Check out the pictures on e9coupe.com. They purport to show rust on the hood, deck lid, quarter panels, doors, fenders, and body at the front and around the trunk. Are these pictures of this car?

Dear johnbobincheck,

no thats not my car! please check at tye bottom of my description page for a link to shutter fly link for more photos. the re is some very small bubbling in some areas but no rust on the shock towers and no rust on tue bottom of the car. yiu are welcome to come and inspet it in persom. Thanks for your interest.

Dear googoutgoogout,

These are definitely this car.

The rust visible in these photos drops the value of this car significantly and demonstrates clearly that the "no rust" in the headline is far from the actual condition of the vehicle. Please cancel my bid immediately or I will need to go through the bid retraction process and report this to Ebay.

John,

Thanks for the PM, glad I posted those photos. This coupe led a tough life, the eBay seller added a new interior but that's all, it is pretty rusty for sure.

I like the part about it is not may car!

"Does your dog bite?"

His feedback is mostly selling Zippo lighters and cars (3 to the same person it appears)
He must be hoping some foreigner buys it and he puts it on a ship.

Dear googoutgoogout,

This car is very rusty, I took photos of it in September when it was first offered for sale in Anaheim, I have the VIN to prove it. It's not as bad as the blue coupe you sold with the paint can lid screwed to bottom of drivers floor. The fender seam rust is only the tip of the iceberg. See the discussion here, http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15872, we don't want the next owner to be taken advantage of, be honest and show closeups of the rust.
