As this is the most popular E9 forum . . . I thought it appropriate to announce this here first! Plus we're going to offer an introductory promo price to E9Coupe.com members!

Vintage Sports & Racing is now offering a CSL replica Air Dam. This piece is professionally built for us here in NH and will be available shortly. The molds are presently in construction and parts will be available hopefully within a few weeks. We have used a BMW OE original properly fitting piece to make the mold, and will be test fitting the first few pieces to ensure quality of fitment. No fiberglass work will be required to install these on your Coupe.

Retail price will be $389.00 plus shipping from 03304

VSR1 to E9Coupe.com members introductory price good until April 30th 2011 . . . $310.00

In relationship to the CSL air dam introduction, a few years ago, you had plans to manufacture a reproduction Alpina air dam. What happened with that? Think there is more of a demand for those than the OEM CSL air dams. Just think the Alpina version looks a little better and more aggressive.

Part complexity kep us from producing the Alpina piece. . . and a cheap knock off on Ebay. As Alpina made it we saw it as a three piece mold.
The CSL airdam became a product because of a need here with my own customers.

If there is enough interest we might produce a 1 piece rear spoiler, molded rear edge of fiberglass that can be painted, the rubber edges are impossible for a low volume part. This piece would be a ready to mount piece unlike the pieces recently available that required fitment blocks from underneath.

details of construction please

Having done "a good bit" of fiberglass work, I have to ask...

What is the construction of the air dam, hand laid, chopper gun, molded, other?
What weight cloth and how many layers?
What resin, polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy ....?
What will be the finish of the part as supplied?

I marvel at the fragility of fiberglass in this position. One encounter with a curb and it's gone, shattered. Just like the fiberglass fairing on my BMW K100RS (don't drop it!). At least later cars and bikes are ABS or other plastic, which in addition to having the color molded in (and thus far more durable) have the advantage of being flexible.

Would that one could get an airdam that was flexible/durable.

I've left the precise layup to the glass professionals . . it will be partially hand layed up and partially chopper gun and will be built in a proper mold. It will be stronger than the originals and will be finished in gelcoat. My goal was an accurate reproduction of the original, which is why I waited to have a real CSL donor car where the owner was willing to lend us the real piece.

The company building these does phenomonal construction with clean neat layup.

yes I agree some fiberglass will fracture with the tap of a curb, good fiberglass should flex a bit, it's all in the resin content . .

Thanks, Mario

As much as I expected.

Choice of resin has a lot to do with flex, as does orientation of the 'glass fibers. "Typical" construction would be a sprayed gelcoat, e-glass and polyester resin. From my surfboard experience, this is a brittle, flex-intolerant construction, but inexpensive and not skill-intensive. Expoxy resin (various types available) would be lighter, somewhat more flex-tolerant, but 1.5x the cost of polyester.

Mario,

I know I could go looking for CSL spoiler photos, but since you're posting, does this require bumper removal? Will it come with hardware to fit the spoiler?

We will be suppling stainless steel screws with bezels for the top edges, and it can be modified by the buyer for the bumpers early or large US style.

Some folks have installed lower braces, but they are not necessary.

Hi,

I am keen to buy, can you confirm some more pictures please looking at front of car " dead on" from centre please.

Look forward to more pics.

front spoiler photos

are there any photos of the front spoiler? any info on whether or nor you will making the small rear spoiler without rubber?

Production has started! I have some pics to post but they are on another PC . . this piece fits and looks good, very minor finishoing on edges after fitting it just to smooth the edge and this piece should be paint process ready!

I'm pleased . . first piece ships tomorrow!

Stan, we could, but presently there's not one piece I've seen that fits to build from without major reconstruction . . and I have no idea what the market for this piece is???

re: CSL Air Dams NEW

Here we are in the latter part of April, there are very few photos of these and none produced and shipped. I understand the commercial aspect of wanting a slew of prepaid orders, but many of us are a tad more cautious. Do you have any considerations to extending that discount offer thru May so there is a finished product to match with that order?

Let's not be too quick to judge - I received one of these air dams over two weeks ago, and have since delivered it to the paint shop for fitment and painting. I was very happy with the way the purchase and shipping transactions went, and Mario was extra accommodating of my need for expedited delivery.

I cannot yet comment on the fitment, but will post feedback after the paint shop is finished.

It's spring and race car season here, so we've been really busy

We shipped the first to nimble and quick, and have shipped several others . . . and to involved with other on going projects to install one here with paint . . but will be doing that in the next week.

We'll post pictures on the website then, and I'll update you folks here.

Here's an image of a car that we recently installed one of our air dams on . . fitment and clearance to bumper was tight , but I have no way of knowing if this particular bumper is correctly or perfectly straight.

Mario, what I was thinking was when you fix mine so it fits properly, then make a mold of the corrected airdam. There is likely a market for them....
