Whelp - here is where I am at. I have just been and done my final inspection of the bits as good as I could. As posted before, the shell is reasonably sound - not perfect but pretty bloody good. The alloy panels are mint. The engine is correct and the gearbox has been found. The front Scheel seats are missing.

Today I was faced with a mountain of fish bins and piles of bits. many bags of vaguely labeled fasteners..

Here are a few snapshots of the bits AFTER the owner found them all and brought them together in the only bit of space he had... It is not great. He assures me it is all there. It looks like he is telling the truth. The condition varies...

On the upside the petri wheel is there (although in bad shape). There are 2 brand new pairs of rear light clusters (one UK, one US). The dash and wood dont look too bad (although the dash has had some woodworm in it!) There are multiples of many things from another CS he broke a while back. The deal also comes with a 3.0 CSA donor with more holes than metal but the brightwork and glass are very good. There will be other bit. The chrome exhaust headers are obviously wrong - that is the only bit of exhaust I would be getting! Much of the rubber looks pretty good but in general all parts are in the kind of condition you might expect from a car that was stripped because it needed restoring and then stored (often not very well) for many years.

the shell and alloy panels are in really very good condition all things considered. The motor is the motor, it is there, largely complete and the correct CSL number

for this pile of lovely scrap the owner wants the equivalent of $US19k

Bear in mind. For reasons to do with my relationship with the seller - I am not going to buy and resell or break. My intention is to have the vehicle refurbished and reassembled by a professional with me sourcing as much as I can myself. I know the cost of doing it will be orders of magnitude more than the purchase price.

I am not writing this for advice so much as to talk myself through what I have ahead!

Monday I decide

Oh, and there are no front seats!

Hi Alan
If your target is to have & own a mint Csl , then this is a ideal project for you.

For the price I and many others on here would refuse to say no.

Looks like a good starting point, how many opportunities will you get like this again?

Always remember, you can always sleep in a car, but you can't sleep in a bank account balance.

That's pretty much how I bought my car, in fact it was even more deconstructed than yours with virtually no labeling. on the parts.
Use the donor car as a reference, especially for the way many of the trim pieces fit.
Go through the online parts catalogue ( realoem ) and order big on new nickel plated nuts, bolts and wave washers.
And no matter how good you think the body is - it isn't. Mine looked great but sandblasting revealed all. 400+ hours in the body shop.

In hindsight I should have bought a CSL as the cost to restore it would have been the same as my CSi but it would be worth a lot more in the end.

Fortunately you have some good sources in the UK. Check out Munich Legends in Chelwwod Gate, there's nothing they don't know about these cars.

Good luck on your journey.

How dare you mention Munich legends aka Munich Robbers/fraudsters on this great site !!!!

I would rather take a E9 to the scrape yard , than have anyone of them cowboys , near any bmw E9!!! (Without prejudice)

Okay. that doesn't look good.
I visited Munich Legends a few years ago and they were very helpful and informative to me, even knowing I wasn't there to buy anything.
They even gave me some free mementos of my visit, a tour of the workshops and let me look through all the cars at leisure.

I gather from your opprobrium the experience is different if you are spending money.

this looks like a challenging but worthy project. please be sure to start a restoration thread in that forum and keep us all posted.

will do. just been out buying a large quantity of racking for my garage... I guess that means I am going to do it unless something goes terribly wrong...

The good news with your dilemma is you can't ever actually lose. If the restoration all goes to plan, you will have a highly coveted CSL at the end of it (albeit it's getting harder and harder due to scarcity and high prices for parts). If it all becomes too monumental an undertaking, the treasure trove you have picked up would easily pay back more than the $19K they cost you sold as parts.
Good luck and I do hope you manage to save it and bring your CSL back to life.
Most RHD CSLs are listed on www.lezebre.eu. Is yours listed there?

This garage has sold customers cars and kept all Or a % of the owners money back.

They have serviced, repaired cars , charged customers for the work that they have not done.
Until payment is made, they refuse to release the car.

They have tricked customers into giving deposits , to view cars with option to buy & when the option to buy has been declined, as the car has faults and it’s not as described, this garage has kept the customers deposit saying it is a non refundable deposit as agreed over the phone .

They’re are a handful of customers from the bmw car club taking this garage/ it’s owner to court & non members also

BUYER/SELLER KEEP WELL AWAY FROM THIS GARAGE , IT’S STAFF.

hey. yep. that is kind of my thinking while also not really feeling that I could ever bring myself to break it. The car is going to be rebuilt and live again. It is just a question of time and money! Anyways - I have pulled the trigger and just got off the phone to the vendor having agreed the sale. The paperwork is being drawn up and the money will be paid. I own a CSL! excited? I reckon! UK city pack 1973 fijord blue number 2285467 is coming to my house! Many updates and questions will follow I am sure! Pretty chuffed at this point (despite the missing front seats!) Alan

Hi Alan

You are officially a owner of a bmw E9, welcome to the family.
I no of a pair original front seats , stored away in a retired pensioners loft, he also has interior
Carpet, rear shelf in his loft
Last time I saw them , the mice had eaten away at the upholstery!!!

Hi. I can trump that - rats have been eating the vinyl on some of my CSL parts and woodworm has got into some of the dash plywood (which is darkly amusing as my business is secondhand/antique furniture!.) I would love to buy a set of seats regardless of condition - that said, I am in New Zealand so shipping could be an issue! Many many things to sort out and a long way to go yet! Cheers. Alan
