Would anyone know what this random button is on my steering column cover? Can't find any reference in my E9 owners manual. (I am thinking perhaps something to do with an early immobiliser, although it looks so neatly done that I wonder if it is some other BMW factory installed accessory button?)

Never seen that. How would describe the action of the button:
- Mechanical (moves something) or electrical (clicks)?
- Rotational or linear push motion?

A priori placing electrical controls in the column is harder than elsewhere, so I have to assume it is there for some mechanical action.

Seems to be a push button. Been on the car for years. I have a 1980's interior photo of my car showing it in place.

I haven't ever pushed it in, as slightly afraid it might be an old alarm, immobiliser or kill switch.

Not factory, why not pull the bottom cover and trace the wires? My car came with 2 switches there when I bought it. Turned out to be the electric antenna and an italian air horn.

This reminds me of the tiny toggle switch I found in the passenger glove compartment in my car. Must have been for a DIY alarm system years ago. The wires were just loose behind the switch.

it is a switch then. I have it in a box so I can use it across all my cars.
