Has anyone modded their E9 for daytime running lights?

For visibility purposes (other cars, pedestrians, etc), I tend to drive my E9 during daylight hours with the headlights on. However, I've left them on several times out of forgetfulness (my modern BMW has "angel eyes" and automatic lights.

I don't want to add anything to my car that would make it look unauthentic (NOT going for concours authenticity). However, I am concerned about safety and want to preserve my car as long as I can and will make modern updates to ensure it.

LED angel eyes? LED day running fog lamps?

Thoughts?

The easiest and cleanest solution would probably be to wire the lights to turn on/off with the ignition.

I’d look at supplying the wire from the light switch with voltage when the key is on. I haven’t done the research, but you should make sure that fuses and relays are used as required. You could also add a DRL override switch to disable your connects and allow the stock lights switch to works as normal.

it's a relatively easy thing to do to wire in a lights on buzzer. A buzzer which buzzes when the lights are on and the driver's door is open for example, would need a buzzer taking a live feed from the dash lights and an earth from the interior light door switch (and a diode to stop the current running backwards and flattening your battery!)

that said, I have not fitted one to my E9 as yet

I drive everywhere with headlights on, so it's just automatic to turn them off when I park

I'm using 'City Lights' in Cibie Hi/Lo beams as daytime running lights. These are small wattage bulbs that are inside the headlights. They've been wired to come on with the parking lights. Not sure if this is legal everywhere. I don't use a buzzer, but I can't help but look at the car when I walk away from it and catch when I leave them on.

my thought was city lights as well. i don't have them but thought they could be the best solution ... glad to know it can work that way

I run my City Lights as day time running lights, though they are more visible at dusk. Also use my fogs as daytime running lights sometimes.

I didn't think of this - thank you. I see these type of lights when in Europe. This is a great solution.

The buzzer idea is good, too. I just happen to have one in my toolkit.

Thanks, everyone.
