Hi

anyone got ideas on best way to dechrome, prep and paint the rear bumper to look like csl rear bumper.

I have seen some on ebay from Germany

thanks

As for all such questions the Search function or Google will bring up a lot of info quickly. I found this: "a mix of 1/3 hydrochloric acid and the rest water we used to strip the chrome off of pieces so we could polish the bare steel for re chroming. Also used the same tank for remove rust off pieces"

and: "If you don't want to buy a whole gallon of muriatic acid, some brands of toilet cleaner have a rather high percentage of HCL" and you can check the MSDS to evaluate those.

but: "I'll ask my buddy for his ex-girlfriends phone number for you. He said she could suck the chrome off a bumper."

I second the fiberglass suggestion.

I found a really ratty 2000CS chrome bumper, treated the rust with POR15, sanded the heck out of it, primed and painted it. With multiple wetsands it looks great and has held up for a year.

The problem with a 2800CS or 3.0CS bumper is that it has the holes for the rubber trim.

If you do have a decent 2000cs bumper, there seem to be a lot of "black chrome" options out there to retain the luster of chrome while going dark. Not sure which technique provides best look or whether they hold up, but may be another option if your car isn't a csl anyway.
