Dellorto Carbs on a 3 Liter

I'm getting ready to start my rebuild project on my 74'. I picked up this motor and transmission about the same time I purchased the car in 2011. I checked the site for anyone posting comments on these Dellorto carborators and could not locate such. Is this a good set up to use? Anyone with experience with this set up? Background: I bought this from the owner who had the car that was parted out due to rust in the mid 80's. He told me (you know how that goes) the motor was built and tuned by a BMW shop in San Fransisco. With this set up the car was fast, for the time. Motor was placed on this stand, drained, oiled up for storage and he placed it in the back of his shop. Its not been stored outside. Details:
-Dellortos: Type 48, Italy. All linkage present
-Motor: 19K73, 1-252-4460 - #3280183
-Head: "81"
- Transmission: 262 00510 90, Not sure what the "225 1.3" means under these number
- Not sure who made the headers either.

Would be sweet to get them going! No experience with them but it looks like you might be facing clearance issues with the air cleaners and intake runners hitting the hood?
 
The motor was pulled from an E3, my cousin had worked on the car, so I'll ask if he remembers any clearance issues.
 
I have experience with both Dellortos and Webers on Alfa engines. In theory, they are pretty much equivalent - oh one might be better at the 99% performance level - but when set up correctly, there should be no discernible difference. The challenge with both Dellorto and Weber carburetors is that they are NOT plug-and-play; you have to adjust the venturis, jets, emulsion tubes, air correctors, etc. for your particular engine's cams, compression ratio, head design, ignition advance curve, etc. etc., as well as for your altitude. Dellorto parts are much less common here in the US than Weber parts, so doing trial and error tuning on Dellortos can get expensive and time consuming.
 
Very cool setup with the Alpina-esque elbows. Like Jay said parts are harder to find but would be cool to get them running. Parts can be had from Dellorto.co.uk aka Eurocarb. There is also a Dellorto facebook group.

 
I found a Bavaria with three Dellortos on it at Pick-n-Pull in Windsor a few years ago. Don't see that too often.
 
These could have been part of an Alpina upgrade done back in the day. I would restore and run them. I’m a DCOE diehard and I think these are very cool.
 
Glad to head that Ray. Once you install and tune that engine, a bunch of us are going to want to check it out.
