Looking at the wiring diagram:

http://www.e9-driven.com/Wiring_Diagram.pdf

I got a thick black wire near my rear carb that is disconnected.

According to the diagram, it could go to the:

- starter

- negative side of the coil (prolly for the tach)

I think it's the former as it's thick and short and could reach the starter; yet the starter starts just fine? Also, there's no power from it w/the ign on.

I also have a black wire w/a red tracer (can't see from the picture) that's been cut off. No power from it w/the ign on.

Acc. to the diagram, it could be:

- from the windshield washer relay to the switch (I wouldn't think it'd be that since it's near the all the green/white choke wiring).

- starter to the positive side of the coil?

Your coil normally runs at 6 Volts - as 6 Volts is lost through the ballast resistor.

When you hit the starter the coil gets a full 12 Volts to assist in starting.

As per the diagram the Black/Red wire should connect to the coil to provide a boost in Voltage when starting.

I have a free black wire with a female blade connector hanging out near the Webers. I haven't investigated. My first thought was that the weber carbs don't require this wire. I see that you have zeniths though.

I'll have to check underneath some more of the starter wiring if there's an unused terminal(s) if that black/red wire should go to one of them. Ditto looking on the coil (which I believe is blue).

I think all the Zenith carbs have green/white wires; don't think any thick black wire would go to the carbs. Again, maybe the thick black wire is to go to the starter???
