Jeff,

you definitely got a thing for early 70's cars. i gotta admit ... the dino 246 is one of my favorites ... just wish i could fit in one to drive it. 911e + 911s ... another of the best of the best. what can i say - good taste.

i guess we all need to play the lottery together and get lucky enough to win ... so we all could have all of the cars we would like to have - in the condition that we would like.

cheers
scott

A few more of the toys...

These are not original paint like the others but are all in very original condition...
1973 911S Targa
1962 Porsche 356B Twin Grill Roadster
1957 356A Speedster
1971 280SL

And with the exception of the 1965 427 Cobra (CSX-3127) that I owned and raced for 15 years the most exciting car that I have ever driven is my SL65 AMG. Granted it Ain't old or as cool as some of my other toys but talk about a total RUSH to drive! 604HP bone stock and 750 ft lbs of torque at 2,00RPM... Now imagine if someone were to chip the ECM for an additional 80hp (which I would never do) how much fun that would be!

This is ridiculous...a brown 280 sl is exactly what I want...and a black speedster. great taste IMHO.

Original paint on E-9's

To see an original painted E-9 metallic such as the Ceylon car of CCR' is a rare sight. Most clear coated metallics failed when having experienced very few years of sun exposure followed by cool/cold nights--they simply separated and failed. Chances of the original single stage paints surviving was/is much higher and far more common--even in similar conditions.

My '74 has the original paint from the belt line down. The upper portion was repainted for the reason mentioned above.

original factory ceylon paint problems

My dad bought my mom a coupe in 73, ceylon. The paintjob peeled or faded -- I don't remember which -- and around 1978, dad got the dealer to pay for a repaint. Years later my father actually met a BMW exec who remembered precisely what the problem was, a series of 73's through a paint booth that was not set up properly, and the owners who complained got the repaint under warranty. This car is actually going through its second repaint right now, and the shop manager noted that the color of the underside of the trunk lid is different from the collar of the door jams.

BMW had problems with the clear coat paints for years, as did many manufacturers. Your dad was lucky they did it right and fixed the paint.

Original Paint Indeed!

My Agave 2800 Cs has original paint and from ten feet it looks good but up close one can see a lot of blemishes all of which were well earned.

Interesting reading bout the Ceylon paint, my 2800 was repainted Ceylon over its original Polaris at some point before I gave it its new 'sweat suit'. Based on the thoughness of the repaint and being rebadged a 3.0 at some point, I wonder if it was rehab'd at the factory after someone's mishap...........hhhmmm.

I like to think the 'purp' didn't make a clean get away after his botched 'Austrian job' and had to go into hiding but still wanted to keep the nice getaway car as a momento. ;-)

Can vouch for the ceylon 'coming apart' over time....Ceylon sure is a nice color.

Elvis would've approved.

I would be surprised if there many USA coupes with original paint, since a lot of those cars had metallic finishes. At one point (1974), I had a 1972 2002 (Malaga), a 1972 2002 tii (Polaris Silver) and a 1972 3.0CS (Fjord Blue). Both the tii's and the CS's paint crazed, as was typical for BMW metallic paints of that era. I still have the CS, but the body work was completely redone to eliminate rust and then repainted.

When you consider that the CS rusted pretty easily and that the metallic paints almost always crazed, it is unlikely that many E9 coupes remain with original paint.

How are these for Tiaga...Bat's not mine, I wish...
