Hey guys,

I'm sure it can be done, but can somebody confirm for me,
Can I remove the gearbox (dogleg box) from the car, splitting it from the bell housing and leaving this attached to the engine?
I'm just prepping myself for this job as the gearbox has developed a nasty grumble in one of the rear shaft bearings.
Would be nice not to have to take out the bell housing/clutch release etc etc

Thanks

Steve

Not that much more to take out with the bell housing. Another 6 or so bolts and disconnect the hydraulic line to the slave or un bolt the slave and hang it on a piece of wire. If you are going through the trouble of pulling the trans you may as well, as an insurance policy, check the clutch etc

Clutch is good, has done less than 500 km since I last did it.
It just looks easier to take the box of and leave bell housing in place than take whole lot off
Those top bolts on the bell housing are a real PITA if I remember rightly

They can be but, if you pull the rear trans support and loosen the motor mounts the engine will rest on the crossmember and give you enough of an angle to get the top bolts. A set of wobble sockets helps. Although I am on this board, I am an E24 guy so that is where my experience comes from. I do think everything should be very similar. I also think if you leave the bell housing, you will have to pull the trans further back for the main shaft to clear

trans removal

Just pull the trans and leave the bell housing in place, just make sure to leave the slave cylinder in place and everything should go well. Dogleg trannys are pretty easy to change out bearings, just be sure to properly shim the countershaft bearings. Good luck, Leroy
