What is the trick for getting the split pin installed?

light taps with a hammer. be sure you have the door check in the correct direction. i had used one of those a while back and i put it on backwards + the door didn't open / close properly.

Hmm, I don't recall that mine was a split pin but instead was a solid pin which I tamped in from above. When I bought the car someone had a thin bolt in there which allowed too much play, the correct pin made it work fine.
