Door hanging adjustment

As I have never done this before, are there any words of wisdom on a drivers side door that doesn't quite close all the way? I am hoping that an adjustment of the striker plate in the car will pull it up to snuff, but wanted to see if there was anyone with advice on this.

It is a small plastic cap for the latch mechanism on the door, sometimes called a kernel. If it's missing door doesn't close completely.
