Hi All

I need to replace the doors and trunk locks, what is the best way to go at this? are the parts interchangeable with any other models, or are they specific to the E9.

Replacement

I had this same issue a while back. I ended up speaking with the guys down in LA about it (coupeKing?). My issue was slightly different in that I was missing the key. They informed me that my best bet was to replace the locks as getting a key mold made would be very difficult given the beveled key design. Unfortunately, getting the locks replaced with another set of E9 locks was an expensive option. I believe they were quoting me in the $500 range. Definitely more than I was willing to pay.

I ended up buying a complete set from Jamic in the Uk, the two door locks and trunk lock were about 250 euro..

All my lock cylinders were gummed up so they wouldn't turn and the tumbler pins certainly wouldn't move. I disassembled and cleaned each. This required prying off the thin metal strip that held in the springs and tumbler pins. Reassembly wasn't difficult but an understanding of the lock principals and careful attention to detail is important. Work over a large sheet of white paper and make a good record of which pins and springs go where. The metal strip was secured by careful peening of the edges of the lock.

Previously the door locks had been changed so I had three different keys for the trunk, doors and ignition. By swapping a few pins around in each cylinder I was able to key the doors and trunk alike although each is missing one of the seven tumbler pins. I haven't tried to rekey the ignition to the rest yet.

If you are thinking about replacing the lock cylinders you might as well have a go at fixing them first. It's not rocket science.
