Door Panel Question

My car has one of each of two patterns of the door panels below. In looking at for sale ads historically, I see both patterns shown in various ads. The herringbone style seems far more prevalent; but I see the dot perforations in many as well.

My car is a 73CSL if that matters. The seats are different but most of the rest of the interior is not, given is the City Package (btw kudos to BMW marketing for making an epic, expensive, and light version of an already excellent somewhat heavier heavier car, and then offering to pork it up again somewhat for more $ ;)

My panels were black if it matters in the matter.

Were both styles available? others? e.g could one choose from various styles?

Any info appreciated - sorry if this has been addressed, I did do a search but couldn't find an answer (though loved rsporsche's embossed post - def the way to go if wandering outside the oem).

the perf pattern is '74 and up. the herringbone pattern would be correct for any coupe with a VIN starting with 22. so a CSL from '73 is a herringbone. i am not sure if the Bat 1 + 2 have perf or not ... but the other CSL are definitely herringbone door + side panels. and with a CSL ... you need to stay true to original

glad you liked the post on the embossing pstterns ... i have delayed my decision on making leather door panels for the time being. i will install the interior with black herringbone for the time being and revisit it after the new engine.

Thanks that's good info. I'll be posting a WTB in the classifieds looking for a driver's herringbone. The wood was pretty messed up there as well - somebody must have replaced it some time ago.

FYI - You can still buy the black door panels new. Also, check the pattern on the rear panels as they should have a pattern also.

Thanks Marcos that's good to know. Will I get the herringbone if I specify 1973? Or will they feel that the 74+ perforations 'superseded' that part and is now all they have for sale? Stated differently: has anyone bought black herringbone panels from the factory recently, and do they match the originals?

I have a lot of experience from the Porsche and Mercedes world, and my view is that the owners are way better on the details than the factory on many things.

Markos, where do you get these new panels ? My back ones are shot - someone has cut a quarter out of them below the seat/armrest line....:-(

directly from BMW ... find the dealer with the best discount ... and check against W+N

FYI... Rear panels 51431811531/2 are $492 USD per side from realoem, currently NA from W&N...sorry, didn't check with discount dealers in US tho, and I know realoem is usually a little high...

getbmwparts - 388.50 ea front door panel. remember, that is just the panel, no metal, no door pocket, no wood, no door pull. the rear panels are much cheaper.
