Is there some magic to installing the waistline trim that goes around the car? I can't get all of the pieces on the car. Without the rubber piece they go on fine. The rubber piece seems to add too much thickness to the trim causing it not to "latch" onto the body clip.

I'm close to going no trim at this point out of frustration.

You mean the external waist line trim half way up the door? This goes hard against the car body, the round rubber washer goes inside the car and the nut that holds the trim on goes on last.

The clips need a small rubber o-ring between them and the body, cannot recall the ID/OD size. This way, they seal around the junction of the body and the clip and also cause the clip to stick out enough to grab the trim. I had the exact issue and this is what an experienced BMW body guy of 30 years told me to do. Also if you have a newer BMW, you can see the body clips actually come with an O-ring.

Sorry guys, Thought this was E9 related.

Best I read thread titles a bit better!!

O-ring on back of clip. Other thing, when you push in the center shaft to lock the clip to the body, reinforce the backside of the sheet metal while doing so if you can. When the light hits mine just right, I can see dimples in the sheet metal where I have these clips...grrrrrrr
