The two downpipes on our coupes came with one having a flare and one without. The input pipes to the muffler both have flares, this requires two different sealing rings, one crushes and the other doesn’t. Where the two flared pipes meet you use the solid metal ring, on the other the downpipe slips into the flared muffler pipe and you use the crushable ring.

Unless you are like me as both of my 73 coupes have straight ends on the downpipes requiring two crushable rings. How can that be? The Fritz Bits exhaust had the correct sealing rings and included new downpipes. Anyone else have this same situation?

I'll check next time I can see my old pipes but both of my 72 downpipes look like the top and bottom one in your pic, not the middle. No compression ring on one like on the W&N setup, I actually thought something was wrong when I went to install it.

You aren’t going crazy- it’s ok…
No short downpipes have flares and
some long downpipes don’t have flares but should have them. All input pipes do have flares.
Its Bmw….

In the Orange Parts books the downpipes were originally matched with no flare and both used the crushable sealing ring. Paul’s 74 has the solid ring and the crushable ring so maybe in 74 it changed. The parts book though is dated XI/75.
