I removed these two years ago and am now poised to re-install. I now notice the ends that are on the B-pillar side differ from left (image 1, rounded edge) to right (image 2, open edge). I am no longer surprised by the things I find with this car but can anyone postulate a reason for this. One replaced with newer design or one from an older or younger car ( mine is a 73 Euro)?

The restoration shop took mine off . They were polished and put back on after the paint work. They are both the same. I know W&N has them and they package them very securely. You should buy new,matching ones. I recently bought a set from W&N for Doug McKenzie and saved him about $100 compared to the BMW dealer.
Now you caused me to create an new W&N list, hopefully it will not trigger a Customs surcharge like my last order. How are shipping times in this current COVID environment?
I have placed at least 2 W&N orders since the shut-down. Both were shipped via UPS in about a week. W&N sent my confirmations and a UPS tracking # a day after I placed an order.
2 recent orders from W&N. I used their 1/2 price shipping "special" both times. Both here in less than a week-UPS. Probably faster than UPS ground from the east coast to me and at a similar cost for a similar size/weight package.
Not the same for US mail. I've experienced lots of lengthy transit times and one lost package in the last month. I think they will save a few bucks in the short term but lose what's left of their customer base in the longer term.
