Hi Folks,

I was hoping to tack this onto an existing e21 Recaro thread but there doesn't seem to be much out there. I know that this is a common mod and it can be difficult to find these seats locally. I shipped a set to a forum member and wanted to provide details for anyone considering moving these things across the country.

The combined weight of the seats and tracks is almost exactly 100 lbs. You can fit both seats and tracks in a Uhaul 24 x 24 x 36 garment box, which costs around $10. I shipped them via Greyhound across the US (2,700 mi) for approximately $130.

To get the seats to fit in a small box, you need to remove the head rests. They are held in place by hairpin cotters, one on each headrest post. To remove you need to undo the top of the inner upholstery, and the top upholstery. Recaro seats are generally very easy to 'unupholster'. With exception to the lower seat base, you won't find a lot of hog rings on older Recaro seats.

I also removed the thigh support adjuster bar. They are held in place by two small hex screws and a spring clip.

I shipped a pair to a buyer is South Dakota a few years ago the same exact way. I don't remember having to remove the headrest but maybe I did.

Greyhound is the way to go on this big stuff, I remember the guy got them in two days.

Honestly if anyone wants to avoid the additional headache, you can get a taller garment box from Uhaul. They have a 48" version. I highly doubt that the shipping price would change much. These seats are going to be rebuilt so partial disassembly wasn't a big deal.
