E24 6 series seats, is it possible to fit them?

Hi all,
Have any of you fitted seats from a 6 series into an E9? Whats involved and how long does it take. Are there any sites on the web that describe the process. Only found this forum last week and was blown away by the work that Malc is doing on his car :D . Bought my first E9 off a certain expert on these vehicles, whos written about them and has owned several. Works as a motoring journalist for a Classic car magazine. Described as in good condition with 1 years MOT. I picked the car up on a Sunday in Hounslow and coming into London had to stop at a set of traffic lights. Imagine my horror when the brakes decided to give up! It had only pasted its test the day before. Had that car about 3 years before I broke it for spares. I now own a CSA which needs work but but the main structure is suprisingly good. This car I want to rebuild to my own specs. 2 years ago I bought a CSL off ebay that was being sold by Gus V.R. He told me that it had the wrong engine (out of a CSI) Inspired by Malcs car I decided at the beginning of the week to go over it and imagine my suprise when the engine number matched the chassis # :D . Chassis # 2285032. Alloy panels are missing and about 2 foot has been cut off the rear with about a foot off the front. It will be a while before I can get stuck into either of the cars as I'm moving to Spain in the near future. Looking for 1 Scheel bucket seat for the CSL. If anyone has a spare to sell or knows of one please let me know. Great site and Malc, keep those pictures coming, they make my mouth water :D

E24 Seat Conversion

Lo and Welcome ,Peter,
I live in Galway,Ireland, and one of my fellow E9 Owners here in Oirland
fitted the above seats.Acording to him the fronts fit fine but the backs are a bit tall and need to be modified.

oops!!

Must have been the wine/beer/neighbours wife cutting the grass in a bikini etc!Gather from Geroid that the backs fit easily, the fronts need careful alteration perhaps some welding as they are too high, unless you are height challenged?
 
E24 Highline electric seats in a CSi

Hi Peter, .... My friend Dax in Galway told me you were interested in fitting E24 seats – so I have just joined the forum. I have made the conversion using a full set of E24 Highline electric Recaro seats into my CSi. There is a bit of work involved but the result is very worthwhile. It's the difference between sitting 'on' your CSi and sitting 'in' your CSi.

Rear seats just drop in, All you have to do is cut a small hole in the back of the plastic shell to accommodate the metal clips on the rear bulkhead. The back of the rear seats sit about 30 - 40mm taller but that looks fine. I also fitted the rear headrests - relatively straight forward. You have to bend the metal legs and make fixing brackets for the bulkhead. I also made two finishing trim panels for the rear shelf.

The front seats require more work. I wanted to save all the original parts so everything was removed very carefully so that all could be replaced if I ever decide to put back the original seats.
You start by removing the seats and carpets. There are two seat rail supporting brackets on either side - the one on the outside houses the rail ratchet lever and this complete assembly has to be removed. The rail support on the inside can stay. To remove the outer support you carefully drill out each spot weld (5mm bit) you will be able to remove the full bracket without damage. With this removed the seat will drop in and sit on top of a cross member. Ideally this should be removed also for the seat to sit properly down on the floor, but obviously it can’t – it’s a structural part of the chassis. You will use it however, to bolt the front of the new rails. You then need to make two new supports for the rear of the rails. I used two steel brackets bolted to the floor.

Because I didn’t remove the original inner rail the seat is slightly off centre and closer to the door. It’s not a problem and in fact it provides more space in the centre so that the seats can be reversed and the electric controls are easy to access. What I mean by reversing the seats is that the passenger seat can be used on the drivers side (usually the better of the pair in a set of second hand seats).

Next is to sort out the carpets. Because the carpet is in sections you could just replace the modified section under the seat but I decided to replace the whole carpet. You can use the original as a template but even so it’s a tricky job to manipulate the carpet into all the corners.

I also built an extension to the centre console housing the handbrake and the radio speakers.

There is a spare terminal on the fuse panel for accessories and I used it fro the seats – very simple wiring operation.

6 series seats

There really are 2 different models of E24 6 series, depending on which of the 5 series sedans they were based on. The first cars, 76-81, are based on the E12 5 series cars and have front seats which mount similarly to the E9 coupes. While I have not checked the measurements exactly between my 79 633 and 3.0CS, I put E21 3 series recaros in the 633 and they were a direct bolt-in, so I am fairly confident that the 633 seats would fit the E9 coupe.

82 6 series cars were a transition year, but I believe that they were mostly E12 based, at least for the body and seats.

The 83-89 6 series cars were based on the E28 5 series sedans and the seats mount completely differently. To install them properly, you have to cut out the E9 couple seat rail mounting 'towers' and reinforce the floors, since the later seats bolt directly to the floors. My 86 635 has this type of seats.

e24 seat compatibility...

Just surfing the back pages, and came across this thread. My car "originally" was a 1979 630cs. It originally had e9 cs seats up front (and regular e24 seats out back) both in cloth until I came up on another 1979 Euro 635csi. Of course, these two cars were based on the early 5 series e12. The front Recaro's bolted right in with no issues just as if the factory did it. Simply 4 bolts on each seat. Two upfront and two out back. This gave a perfect ride height and feel to the car, and of course, the back seats went in perfectly as well. So, I assume that the front seats from an early e24 before pre 1982, or e12 5 series will fit into the e9 with no problems. Can't comment on the rear seats. HTH.
