I have been reading with interest the threads on using the window motors from the E28 in the coupe and there suitability either for front or back and wiring compatibility.
As I am restoring two coupes at the moment and needing to replace six motors, I purchased 4 motors from a E28 on EBay, both the front and rear motors fitted perfectly in the two coupes rear windows with no drilling or filing of any kind, the speed of the windows is a vast improvement on the old motors, I hope this helps anyone in a similar situation.

The front and back motors from the E28 look slightly different but both types fit the rear windows in the coupe, I am in France at the moment but when I get back I can post some pictures of them in place.

Why do you need to replace 6 electric motors on 2 cars?
My experience is that the early, sardine motors are faster than the sturdier, later ones.
Problem up front is that the mountings in the doors are different. I.e. you cannot use the earlier motors in later (>74?) doors.
As you surely know, the main problems with the electric windows relate to the mechanisms being full of dirt and 40 year old, stale grease.

The existing motors are the later type with the plastic casing, the main problem was the motors seizing from corrosion and even though I did get them running I was not happy to put them back in the cars, I did not try the E28 motors on the front doors but they do look like they would fit.

Wow

The link Kurtd provided is really great. To take the time to document the conversion in such detail for anyone doing this is just incredible. And others have provided great detail on projects they've done as well... so very generous. Thanks to you Kurt and all of the others that have also been so generous.

I'm glad you found it helpful. As Chris mentions installing the motor on the later style regulator is easier, no cutting required. I found this out when we did Shawn's windows, same year but different regulators.
