I'm having trouble separating my newly acquired e28 window motor from it's regulator.

True there's plenty of information about installing the e28 motor, but I can't seem to find any info on removing the motor from it's e28 regulator.

Can anyone offer up some info on how to separate the 2?

Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by "regulator"? Are you referring to the mechanism that attaches to the e28 window (commonly called a "window regulator")? Or to the gearbox that is between the motor and the output gear? If the latter, I have no idea of how to separate them. I have removed the two screws that secure the motor to the gearbox and rotated the motor 180°. When I did that, I noticed that the motor was still stuck to the gearbox. But since my objective was simply to change the motor's orientation by 180°, and not separate the two parts, I didn't worry about it.

Usually there are three Philips screws holding the drive to the regulator. I use an impact screwdriver available from Harbor Freight for about $10.

I cannot answer the e28 attachment to the e28 window regulator, but I recall removing the three Phillips screws on the E9 window regulator has to be done with great care as the regulator spring can unwind suddenly and really hurt you...

There’s three screws that hold the motor to the regulator. Undo the screws and then it has to lift off of the regulator. Depending on the position the window was in when the regulator was separated from it, one of the screws might be obscured by the arm.

Thank you. This was it. The 3rd screw was hidden behind the 1/2 round gear sprocket thing (see photos).
I had to wire it up to the car to rotate it, but I had to test the motor before installation anyway so....

Not a good omen. If I'm posting questions before I even start installing the window motor, I'm in trouble.
(But then again, I've done this twice before, so maybe not)

Having put these on, there are two screws which are easily accessible. The third requires the large cog to be turned until thge small hole coicides with the third and final screw. If the E28 regulator is similar, there is your answer.

Lots of good info here:

I have e28 motors for my 71 e9. Can you point me to links to help with the project?

The basics of this swap are contained in a thread written by user "kurtd" that is in the FAQ section at: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/installing-e28-window-motors-in-place-of-sardine-can-motors.43946/

You might also check out a thread that I wrote in 2017 that describes how I did some things differently than kurtd had described: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/a-few-tips-on-installing-e28-window-motors.27320/

Thanks so much. I have all four e28 motors from all four doors. It sounds like only the rears are used. I’ll take a look, but I may need to find two more rear motors.
