Great pictures. Note the stickers on the back sides reading "021412". To my mind the veneer panels always came as sets, pre-matched by the supplier, each set with their own numbers. It was not up to the workers at the assembly line to choose from a dozen and use the best-looking.
Probably you all knew this before, and I am the last to notice. At least, now it is easier to understand (for me) why you can spot from a distance when the ashtray in an E3 has been replaced.

That is very interesting Christoph. I have a couple sets of these and never looked at that number on the back. I just posted the best pair. Another set here also has matching numbers.
