I have a (single) blue book...

IMG_9449.JPG

It is complete with updates through 12/71. My 1972 MY E3 is 7/71 production so it contains everything I need.

It is a very full book.

My theory is that initially the Workshop Manual "Blue Book" fit in one binder. At some point after several updates, it didn't and two binders were needed. At that point, two new empty binders were issued marked Band 1 and Band 2 and the title changed to 2500-3.0CSi (even though they still covered the E3 including the 3.3) with instructions on where to split the chapters. My guess is that this happened shortly after the 12/71 update.

Any other theories....or hopefully facts even?

See if both ZF and Getrag manual and auto trans are included, and CSi injection. I think that is the difference. Plus wiring changed as well

ZF and Getrag 4 speeds are included. Technical data and full disassembly, reassembly etc. for both

Auto included, but only the ZF. Was there a BW on later cars?

CSi Technical Data included, but no detail like there is for carbureted engines. Since the last update is 12/71, perhaps this is a US only edition?

I used my 2002 Blue manual to completely rebuild my 2002 engine,so I know how important these books are to owners who do their own work. When I bought my '73 CS with the '86 E24 engine swap made by Korman, the PO also gave me the blue book entitled "Workshop Manual 2500 to 3.0CSi ". It's one overstuffed book with tabs going from 00-21, 23-24, 25,26,31,32,33,34,35,36,41-54,61-65,71,72

I know my Bluebook doesn't have the E24 engine & 5-speed transmission, but are there other tabs besides the ones in the above post?

@Drew Gregg My tabs are as you show and it is titled "Workshop Manual" like your 1 volume book. It must be an earlier edition of yours.

Do the 2 book set of Blue Books have different tabs?

Although there is a 00 Maintenance tab in mine, that chapter is not in my book. All the other chapters seem to be very complete however. Here are the sub chapters on 11 Engine.

I have a Blue book indicating BMW 2500, 2800 and 3000 with sections 1 to 35 and a 2nd Blue Book (named Band 2) indicating BMW 2500, 2800 and 3.0 S with sections of 17a and then 26a to 72.

Yes, BW auto was introduced after start of 3.0CS production, VINs are in the FAQ Production Changes. Wiring changed a lot for MY 74 coupes and I assume e3 as well.
