I just installed a "hotspark" ignition and want to recheck my timing. I have searched but have not concluded what I am looking for.
With engine warm, vacuum lines plugged and idle set to 1700, should I see a "Z" with my timing light aimed at the flywheel?

Thank you very much for the link, I had not seen that before and it is very helpful !!
I left my manual at my brothers house 50 miles away and that is why I am here right now!

The link I had used previously is "first fives" which indicates that when static timing you will see the ball on the flywheel which is usually marked with a "Z", but in fact these are 2 seperate marks. (http://www.firstfives.org/ FAQ timing ) I tossed that info. and used the link you provided using only the ball or "O".

I was concerned because after setting the timing I brought the idle back down but the engine did not seem to respond as I thought it should, but what I realized was that the vacuum lines were still plugged and the advance was not functioning.
I reconnected the vacuum lines and now it runs pretty darn good again!
Thanks again 61porsche, you and others make this a reliable and enjoyable site.
