yesterday i found 2 e3s parked under a tree near an abandoned farm house. i spoke to a neighbour and i think (he was an 80+ year old italian with little english) to poke around the cars. one car had a perfect tool box. BUT it was not the clamshell type as in the e9. rather the door appeared to be the same but it hinged off the boot (trunk) and screwed into a plastic fitting, itself screwed into the boot.

i always thought the e3 and e9 boxes were the same. does anyone know if at least the doors are the same (it's over an hour's drive back to the farm)?

thanks

E3 boot tool container

As far as I know, the triangular shaped tool containers are the same in both the 2-door and 4-door models. I may have misread your description, but it seems as though you may have a container that is completely separating from the boot lid. In other words, is the whole thing (including the inverted bottom portion) hanging from the boot? Possible dinki di scenario? If you are going to drive 2hrs round trip given the cost of petrol, a bargain it may may not be.

Why don't you consult the Real Oem diagrams to determine if there were any changes between years and to refamiliarize yourself with what you saw. A pic might be very helpful here.

Fair dinkum

Tool Box

The E9 CS coupes had a clamshell type box til early '74 model year, when it switched to a single 'halfshell' model for--probably--cost reasons. Used this later box with variations also on the E12 sedans and the E24 6 and E23 7's to shortly thereafter follow. The CS items are the same for the E3 sedans. These toolboxes do not interchange from early to late as the infrastructure of the decklid is different on the later cars to accept these one-piece units.

thanks guys,

spoke to the owner today and yes, the car is late '74. He is sending it to the tip, so if anyne wants a tool box lid for a late model car let me know and I can possibly follow it up.

cheers

Interesting, ... my '72 E3 did not have a tool box (factory delivery). The tools were held in an olive green vinyl roll up bag with red cloth edge binding.
