Before you read, there is a very solid chance that my driveshaft and transmission are from a 1978 530i. This could affect your drivtrain if you are following my guide.

Hi guys,

Just had my driveshaft dropped off at General Driveshaft Service in Monrovia. The total is coming out to $360 dollars for the lengthing and complete rebuild of the unit. Every driveshaft place you call will tell you that they cannot do BMW driveshafts, explain to them the driveshaft is conventional and not friction welded.

PARTS LIST:

Transmission: Getrag 265
Mounting Bracket: 23711175731
E28 M5 Guibo: 30mm thick: 26117511454
Driveshaft: E9 2800CS Auto Transmission Driveshaft (or possibly a 1978 driveshaft, as the tranny that was removed could have been from a 1978 530i).

I mock installed the transmission on the engine and positioned the trans into place using the mount and bracket in order to determine the length the driveshaft needed to be lengthened.

I installed the drive shaft to the differential and hung the center support. I then pushed the driveshaft all the way back and marked the edge, then slid it to the opposite extreme. I marked the center between the marks and locked down the center support bearing.

I then supported the driveshaft with a 2x4 and placed long bolts between the trans guibo and driveshaft. The amount to lengthen came to 1.6 inches.

With the driveshaft at the position it has about 3/8-1/2 inch to move in either direction.

I believe Carl Nelson published the dimension to lengthen the automatic driveshaft at .750 inches, but this is with the standard guibo. The M5 guibo is 15mm shorter, approximately .6 inches. So if you .75+.6 you'll get 1.35, very close to what I measured. Each car is different and every mounts wear can play into this. The adjustement in the slip spline can absorb a good amount of tolerance.

So its a good idea to measure your set up before you have the driveshaft modified.

Thanks Chris. We SoCal guys are lucky to have McMaster Carr so close by. I order all my bolts from them.

Hi Don,

The guibo I received is measuring at 30mm. There is a chance BMA parts sent me the incorrect part.

But I think the lesson here is to measure your setup, its worth the delay of a few days.

I spoke to Carl Nelson today (after placing a order of clutch related goodies). He mentioned to make sure the driveshaft alignment pin is not bottoming out in the transmissions output flange. So I am having the driveshaft shop hold off until tomorrow when I can bring the tranny in to verify the fit.
