I am looking ahead to install a 3.5 l engine from 1985 gray mkt 635 with 5 speed trans. into my 1971 2800 cs 4 speed config. What are the major considerations or problems I will encounter? Many thanks!

Another option

If you do already have the grey market motor

Using that crank with a american block would get you close to a 3.7lt Bigger bore longer crank longer rods

Do a search on m90 on this board give some where to start

If you do decide to do just the change over better straight forward "Oilpan, Distri Driver housing" etc etc

I think there are a lot of answers to your question, but some questions probably need to be asked. Are you looking at keeping the carbs, or are you going with the EFI and electronic ignition? I was directed to the following link for what is needed from the donor car if you're going with EFI/Motronic. Keep in mind the above question is going to determine what you need from the donor car as well in the way of transmission. I'm doing a similar upgrade, and still have much research to do, but some motronic upgrades need the bellhousing from the older motronic car because there is a sensor on it, whereas newer versions only require the sensor on the block/crank.

Crap, forgot the link

Thanks, I will have an entire car to go through for all the parts needed from the '85 Gray mkt 635. I would like to go with motronic and the fuel infection.

1985 Euro 635 engine and transmission for E9 conversion

One area where you may have been lucky is that most 1985 535/635/735s with overdrive 5 speeds got the Getrag 265 transmission instead of the Getrag 260 like the other years. The 265 can be converted to drive a speedometer cable using the parts from other Getrag transmissions which had speedometer cable drives, like most 4 speeds. This will allow you to continue to use your coupe's speedometer instead of having to convert to an electric speedometer.

That's the route I'm going to go. There are lots of docs out there on it, you just need to find the right docs for the Motronic transplant you're looking to do I think. I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up with a 535i donor car myself unless I can find a Euro 635 that has what I like under the hood. Keep in touch.

Thanks All! I hope to find that the tranny is the getrag 265 'cause for the obvious, the speedo would be nice to keep. What about the oilpan/oil pump and chassis conflicts?

As I recall, engine mount location is different on the drivers side of the block, requires a fabbed mount to reach forward from the (farther) back location on the block to the mount location on your E9 crossmember.

I'm pretty sure this is only an issue with the 89 and laters 3.5s.
