Hi there. I am a noob to the world of e9 coupes, but have always admired their lines. I was really drawn to this car here, http://picasaweb.google.com/evanesterman/1973BMW30CS02... but it has already been sold. How much time, energy and financial resources would be involved in setting up a coupe like this...with the front air dam, wheels, lowered suspension, 5speed tranny, 3.5 motor, etc. I know the number one problem would be finding a clean rust free car. But I really like the style of this particular model, and also assume that with this motor set-up (if tuned properly) and 5 speed tranny the car would be a blast to drive. Thanks for any thoughts.

It depends on both how far you want to go with it and the condition of the original car. For just the mods listed, you are looking at:

1. Alpinas, open lug, 16", staggered- 1500$+
2. Air dam- ~500$ painted. Part from Dan Koturov's site.
3. 3.5, no motronic, original head- ~500$ for used short block, who knows about labor. Then there's all the other costs, like gaskets, pumps, lines, upgraded cooling, all the other bits.
4. 5 speed- Used units range from 500-1200$, rebuilds about 2500$. Driveshaft costs ~400$. Then there's the clutch costs, and you want to try and use the original flywheel. (weighs less)
5. Moonroof- I'm not sure about this one.

So really, this could cost anywhere from 10k if you start with a perfect car up to 40k+ if you start with a bad one.

Thank you very much for the detailed info. That is exactly what I was looking for. Maybe I will hold out until a car that at least has had some of these mods done to it pops up for sale, before I dive into a pretty costly project. I know the car that I used as an example sold for $27,500, but reading some of the reviews of that seller on here...makes me not as upset that it was already sold.
