E9 Steering Box Adjustment do you have to Remove the Brake Booster?

The steering in my new E9 (73 3.0CS) is very tight.. Do you have to remove the brake booster to adjust the steering box?
 
It's been done both ways.

Offset screwdriver or 1/4" ratchet and a box wrench.

Make sure it's not something else, first by dropping the drag link off.

61Porsche there are already a lot of new parts on the front suspension (ball Joints, Tie rods ends etc)... What else could cause the steering to feel very tight other then the box is either dry or adjusted to tight?
 
Idler arm bushing. When turning left or right does the wheel return to center easily? This is one indication of idler arm bushing issues, not easy to get to either by the DIY'er.
 
The link that jhwshark sent was for "genner" non-power steering

My car is a US car with power steering... In the front of the steering box is a 10mm nut with an allen screw. Is this the adjustment and if so is counter clockwise (out) the direction to loosen the steering?

On some boxes you tighten the screw to loosen the steering play...
 
Well,

Lots of things:

The steering shaft has bushings and bearings.

The steering shaft u-joints- usual suspect.

Yes, the idler arm/ bushing.

The pump- if someone monkeyed with it. The shaft has a bearing preload done by teflon washers of differing thicknesses.

There is a centerpoint. The preload must be done with the wheels turned.

I don't recall precisely, but the steering shafts, joints could be handed; another monkey.....

Drop the steering and then tell me it's the box. A good flush might help and there is a drain plug.

Boxes aren't cheap.

I just learned from Carl that there is no adjustment for the power steering box... They are set at the factory...

I drained and refilled the PS resevour twice and it seems much better!

Is there a filter at the bottom like a vintage MB?
 
Since you replaced the fluid did you do the maintenance bleeding to eliminate the bubbles and other symptoms they can cause??

With filler cap open, engine ruining, check for full at top mark, turn wheel rapidly from left lock to right lock a few times watching to see bubbles minimize/eliminate and add oil as appropriate to top mark.

I wonder if my MGB (if considered vintage) has the filter, never had to rebuild it. No hydraulic assist either.
