Hi. I recently purchased a cracked up tool tray from a member of this forum hoping that between a broken tray I have and the one I purchased I could make one nice tray.
I found out it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.
I first glued all cracks with crazy glue along with my fingers because I was too lazy to put on gloves which are next to me onmy work table.
Secondly I put a thick layer of apoxy on the back side that attaches to the trunk lid. This not only made the back piece much stronger but also kept the cracks together.
Thirdly I did not like the looks of the piece that I put the coat of apoxy on so I found a sun protecter for windshields that had some sponge-like material between the layers.
The outside looked halfway decents soI started to make the inside where the tool holder fits in better than the original. I purchased some mirror-finished plastic and decorated the sections on both pieces of the tray.
Next I thought it would make sense to put a battery operated light that would help see the tools in the dark. $1.25 makes it very afordable.
I purchased a spray can of paint without a sample with me and I was shoked that it match near perfectly. I gave it two coats.
I forgot to mention that I reinforced the the hinge with a aluminum piece that I had made a few years ago along with specially made pieces aluminum pieces to make the wings stronger and than made up some wings that I cut out of an old tray and glued them on top of the aluminum. You can see the hinge reinforcement in photo two and five.
I have attached some photos. I 'm not going to tell you how many hours it took me to get the finished product.
Thanks for your time.
