Hi

We're a company in the UK who normally deal in the restoration of Jaguar XJS & Series 3 saloons from the 70's to 90's. We have a client who would like us to apply our philosophy to the E9 but we're having the devil's own job trying to find one to buy. Does anyone know of any RHD CSI's for sale in the UK which might suit?

Thanks for reading this

Are you these guys?

That would be sweet. That said, you may have a harder time finding a UK CSi. You may be able to find a LHD CSi in the likes of NZ or AUS, or on the mainland.

Also, how "restorable" are you talking here? You can restore a parts car, it just takes more money. Similarly, you can put new paint on a driver and call it restored for far less. Please give a description of the condition of the car you are looking for, as sort of a guidepost.

Hi Rohan,
I did try to send you a personal message but it said I couldn't because your personal message folder is full up. Mind you, it is a really low limit, so its not surprising they get full.

No response from the Jaguar guys.

Regards

Graeme

Hi guys, thanks for your replies - & sorry not to get back sooner - I've been trawling the web for this challenge!

Yes we are KWE cars, well spotted that man! In terms of restorable we have a budget of around £40 -£50k for the full project. As you may have seen on our website, with the Jaguars we can 'renew' the engine (rebore, chemical clean etc) & all ancilliaries replaced with new or reconditioned; we renew the suspension & upgrade with modern technologies unless the customer requests that the car should be kept as original; we renew the interior; bare metal respray (top of the range cars anyway); & in some cases we add satnav, new audio, parking sensors etc so you've got a 'modern' car in a classic body. This is not to some people's liking & there are those that prefer to keep their cars as original as possible but at least with the ride improved.

Thanks also for the offers of your cars, but our guy is adamant that it is a CSi he wants. I know, I know it's a big ask! :( Am I right that there was just over 200 made?

Sweet, I love your work! I am a big fan of modernizing older cars, without going the route of a resto-mod, more akin to a re-manufacturing. It also helps that I find the XKS a very pretty car. If you do start doing coupes, please look into wiring. There is a distinct lack of good harnesses available.

Hi Pestosmum,
I am sure that forum members far more knowledgeable than I will answer your question about CSi production numbers. The best I can do is point you towards this link http://www.bmwcsregistry.org/Coupe_Information/e9production.html which gives the production numbers of the 1970's CS range. I must admit that I was surprised to find that there were fewer RHD CSi's made than RHD CSL's, you live and learn.
Cheers
Graeme

Thanks Graeme, that's useful stuff. So I wonder how many are left after 30 years? They seem to have the same rust problems as the Jags. Methinks this is going to be even tougher that I first thought! Are there any rallies coming up in the UK in the next month or two?

Hi,
I'm sorry but I don't know when there are any rallies, you might try searching for "BMW owners club UK" maybe you might find some info that way?

I knocked up a spreadsheet a while ago to estimate the number of CSLs left in the world. Applying that calculation to the 422 RHD CSi's produced and using an attrition rate of 5% (very conservative) it comes up with 67 cars remaining, so it looks like you might have your work cut out to find one.

I too am heavily in favour of your approach to "updating" older cars, I think in the USA they call it "Restifying". To me, having the classic beauty of some of the older cars but with real Brakes, Aircon, great performance and economy thanks to a modern powertrain really is the best of both words. Lest I bring upon myself the wrath of any purists on the forum, I must stress that this heretical philosophy should not apply to our beloved coupes.
Cheers
Graeme
