I got around to cleaning up a spare front bumper and the rubber strips. The strips are only held to the bumper by their outboard ends passing through a hole, then crimped (for lack of a better word). There seem to have been some rivets (?) which held a formed metal strip along the center of the rubber strips... anyone who has been in there will know what I'm referring to.
Questions: how is the chromed bumper section attached to the hidden metal strip and rubber? I see the remains of what seem to be rusted-off rivets and corresponding holes in the chromed section. Does this suggest the metal strip was first riveted to the chromed section, and in that case how was the rubber attached? The parts fiche doesn't offer any help. Would sheet metal screws through the bumper, metal strip and into the rubber be my best recourse?
This is an extra bumper, and when I know it's re-assemble-able, I'll sell it or the rather pitted one that's presently on my car.
TIA
Charlie
