ECU Glovebox Mount

I think I found a simple way to mount the ECU up high above the glove box. I drilled a hole in the shelf that holds the glove box hinge, bent an 8" long galvanized metal strap to the correct shape, drilled mounting holes in it, then bolted it to ECU, slipped it in and secured it with hex head course thread bolt. I added another mount on the forward side by using a stiff predrilled strap attached to the M6 bolt that holds the glove box latch, bent it slightly and attached to ECU. Since unit is fairly light this will keep it from bouncing and I should not have to trim the glove box anywhere. Since my harness only wants to bend in one direction this puts the large connector towards the A pillar. To remove this plug I will have to unsecure the ECU but that isn't a problem. I can also tuck the main and fuel relays up on this side as well (I didn't want them exposed in engine bay), nothing will dangle down. It clears the A/C pipes which was one worry. Had the harness been longer I would have moved it farther to the right and attached it to the kick panel sheet metal.

And I used JBWeld to attach a bracket from Ace Hardware to the kick panel structure, shown here with duct tape until it dries by tomorrow. I will zip tie the two relays and the power junction block here, everything up and out of the way. I'm feeling euphoric with this fix, I only need to receive the steel fuel return line from BMW, install fuel pump and run a wire to the pump. And figure out a neat way to mount fuel filter near booster, any recommendations on how to do that? Thanks.

Thanks for sharing, Chris. I feared using the metal (with holes); I thought over time it might succumb to the weight of the ECU. I cut two 3/4" strips from sheet metal, similar to a previous poster that used velcro but have not mounted it yet.

Separate and apart, are you going to remove the vapor line (seen in one of your pics) now that you've changed your engine? I removed the line but I'm questioning the value of the overfill bottle in the trunk. Thoughts?

I am leaving vapor line and hooking a line to the plenum from charcoal can, it cured the fuel smell I had when I bought the coupe. The metal strap with holes is very robust, not plumbers tape so it will work fine.

I will have to trim 1" off the back of the glove box and move the lamp, not a big deal, it won't go back in until it runs and the A/C shop hooks up and charges the system.

hmmm

On my first e9 (blue one) there was a black box under the rear seat on the driver side. Since my car has (or came to me with) dual carbs I always thought that was some funky seat belt thing but in light of RS's post, is it possible that someone converted this from a FI car? or is that black box for something else? It's still there so I could take a picture-:?:

My bet is that it's an old amplifier
