Electric fuel Pump

I have a 1972 3.0cs with two Weber 32/36's. I don't drive the car often enough, as a result, when I do it takes forever to get it started. I think the problem is the fuel in the carburetor and the line between the tank is dry and the mechanical pump has to refill everything. I am considering replacing the mechanical pump with an electric pump, how do you all feel about making this change?

Hi Doug, this topic comes up a lot, many resolve to adding a check valve in the fuel line to keep some fuel near the carburettors to aid in starting, instead of trying to crank gas all the way from the tank up front. I have the same Weber 32/36 setup and once I did this simple mod, it changed everything. Oh that, plus a fully charged battery. Good luck. Mike
 
I don’t know why but the Webers seem to be notorious for fuel evaporating in the fuel bowl as well. The Solex in my 2002 keeps fuel in the bowl for a long time. Add the one way valve. On my NK Carl N talked me into a Weber and I had to add an electric pump in the trunk but use it only to prime the carb.
 
I can see how a one-way valve would prevent fuel from flowing back though the line into the tank. But I can't see how the valve would prevent fuel from evaporating from the Webers. My sense is that the fuel pump has to replace a greater volume of fuel in the two carburetors than in the line. In other words, that the valve would only solve a small fraction of this problem.

I too have Weber 32/36's and still have a mechanical pump. My solution is to drive my coupe frequently. And when I haven't, I remove the air filter top and squirt some gas down the barrels. A switchable electric pump would be more convenient, but then I couldn't get my hands dirty.
 
Thanks for your responses, I do have a check valve inline I think the fuel is evaporating. I think my (new) mechanical pump is working pretty hard to refill the system and my starter is grinding away long and hard until it starts.

Hi Doug, I should add, in my case, I have a fuel filter between the check valve and the carbs. So, there is usually an amount of fuel sitting in the filter to feed the Webers and help in startup.
