Dean,
You probably have got some wires crossed, no pun intended.
If you have a voltmeter and or multimeter that would certainly help.
The Coupe wiring is pretty simple compared to modern cars so you have a fighting chance of tracking the problem down
Here's a few ideas, thoughts and suggestions....
1... BMW used BROWN coloured wires as ground/earth.
2... Pull all the fuses.
3... Check each circuit from the fuses to ground, switches off, ignition off
4... If you get a "reading" then there is an electrical path to ground suggesting a short somewhere.
5... Ignition switch circuit does not have a fuse in it.
6... Check if possible each major section of harness in isolation. there could be an internal short.
7... make sure all ground connections are clean and healthy.
8... Check column switches for continuity and operation.
9... Check any relays for correct operation and wiring
10. Check bulbs are ok.
11. Ensure all plugs and connectors are seated properly
Best to work methodically on each section at a time, that way you have a chance of finding the problem. Take your time as finding electrical faults can be frustrating, I should know
