Do I remember that someone had leftover new elephant skin/vinyl? I am working on trunk panels, and could use some...thanks for any consideration. Size/price..thanks,

Dave,

are you working on floor boards, the rear panel around the lights, the trunk lid (underside) panels? in order to do the floor boards, it will probably take 2 meters of skin.

the two main floor panels take a piece of 5'-9" x 2'-10", the 3rd floor panel takes a piece that is 40" x 16" ... if you want the grain of the skin to go the same direction, and i think you do ... it will take a 2m piece. if you want to do the rear light panel, you will need a 2m piece just to do that ... and you will have leftovers.

i think you can do the rear light panel, the 3 floor panels and possibly the 2 under trunk lid panels in 3m of skin.

I'm currently researching alternatives in preparation for doing my trunk too.
An interesting product that i found that looks to be very close to original is 'Boltaflex'.

Another product that is close-ish to matching is 'Tolex'.

The texture looks very similar, but on my monitor the color looks too silvery.

The Boltaflex appears to be very close to a match in both texture and color.

I've ordered samples and will post my findings when they arrive.

look forward to hearing what you find out. my guess is that the boltaflex is going to be not as heavily textured or as heavy as the elephant skin ... upholstery vinyl is usually much thinner. the Tolex looks very closet to me.

Tolex - the covering for Fender amplifiers - gotta love it.

Well, I've learned something today. I was curious as to what Elephant Skin was so when I discovered you were speaking of the trunk material covering I went to the links provided.

To my surprise I read the word TOLEX. Being a longtime vintage Chrysler collector I owned a 1951 New Yorker Town & Country wagon which is the rarest of the rare with a total production of 251 units.

That wagon and all Chrysler wagons in that area used TOLEX in a brown tone but it is referred to as Alligator Skin within that group and the grain was a bit different. Then I went to this link and learned more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolex

Johnl, I loved those real wood wagons. My dad had a 1953 Mercury wagon, the last Merc with real wood on the side. His 1959 Ford Country Squire Had the fake "metal" wood. Looked like what it was, FAKE!

The Merc was a kind of Aquamarine with a metal dash in the same color. Three on the column is what I learned on.

Any photos of your Chrysler? email to [email protected]

If there appears to be no new elephant skin left, then I bet this guy could reproduce it for you if you gave him a piece of old material.

He is the guy who made a small run of black CSL headliner for me.

Would be nice to have a consistent supply of elephant skin.

3nsahalee, I ordered a sample of that exact item from mojotone about six months ago. The color is absolutely "silver" and even has some sheen to it and not close to the original elephant skin color of gray.

However the texture and the material itself is thin with little backing which are both very close to the original.

I also went to the next step and contacted the manufacturer directly to see if a gray version was available. At that time they had said no.

For the price per yard - its substantially cheaper than the stuff from BMW ... you can buy a bunch of cans of SEM storm gray and still come out way ahead.

Scott,

it is still available from BMW ... but at a price.
51951811281 - $40.72 / meter from tomkinson. 53.58 list

interesting enough, while looking for the part number on penske - i see that the floorboard over the spare tire has come back into production.
51471811935 - at a price however ... $291.62 ... not available from tomkinson though.

Here are two pictures of the black tolex sample I got from them. Still looking for the silver one.
