Eliminate gear indicator in a 74 auto?

Had my dash redone and can't see putting the "PRNDL" lights back on the dash where it was (to right of gauge pod)Looks out of place.Can I move it to pre-74 position on top of steering column cover?Is there a way to light up actual gear selector face plate?Do I even need it?Will trans work without it?(Please don't tell me to switch to a manual)

Yes you can remove it altogether and the transmission will work fine.
There should be a hole on the steering wheel top enclosure though to let the cables through., otherwise you'll need to drill one.
